The first thing that strikes you is the scale – the width of the stage, the fanciness of the staging, and when they come in, the costumes and the limo full of stars. It is really impressive.
Positives
- the staging, particularly of the musical numbers is on a Vegas scale
Negatives
- although ostensibly a family performance most of the jokes about explicit sexual acts would have gone over the kids’ heads. I’m absolutely not prudish, but in a panto the jokes have to work on two levels, and these only worked on one. There were no jokes for the kids.
- Julian Clarey, despite being very funny at times, was clearly bored
- there was no plot whatsoever, just a series of acts like a variety show.
